Not quite. That 37% was measured in one context, and structure is only one of several levers, most of them stronger than layout.
Here is the real problem: most teams pick paywall structure by taste and then argue about it forever. Single screen or three screens becomes a belief you defend, when it should be a test you run. The Honest Counter-Side
Here is where "just go multi-step" falls apart. The dilemma is real, and three things keep it real.
Placement decides a lot. The Superwall win was measured in onboarding placements, where motivation peaks, the user is fresh off experiencing the value and primed to commit. That scope matters. For a warm in-app re-prompt, where a user already knows the app and just wants the price, a fast single screen can be the better call. The principle is to match structure to traffic temperature, not to assume the onboarding result transfers everywhere. We measured a 37% lift in onboarding; we did not measure a general cold-versus-warm law, and you shouldn't treat it as one.
Design is the weakest lever you have. Visual and copy-only tests win just 34.6% of the time, the lowest win rate of any paywall change. Compare that to trial structure at 59.6%, plan duration at 58.7%, and localization at 62.3% (Adapty, 2026). Rearranging screens and polishing copy is real, but it is the lever least likely to move your number. Do not expect layout to rescue a weak offer.
Placement outweighs design at the macro level too. Onboarding-with-trial paywalls convert at 1.35% versus 0.89% for in-app-with-trial (Adapty, 2026). Where the paywall sits outweighs how many screens it is built from.
The takeaway is not "multi-step wins." It is: structure is matched to placement and then tested, never assumed.
What Actually Moves the Number
Here are the levers in priority order. Work top to bottom.
1. Get value in before the price. Both structures live or die on this; the multi-step format just enforces it. Use a value recap, a personalized loader with social proof, and a clear Free vs Pro comparison before the price ever appears (Adapty, 2026).
2. Fix the offer before the layout.
